The monastery of Punakha, situated between two rivers, the Phochu and the Mochu, at their confluence in central Bhutan. The monastery serves as the winter quarters of the thousand monks of Thimpu Dzong, who used to make the three-day journey on foot. Punakha monastery was badly damaged by fire in 1986, then again in 1994 when a dam burst at the head of a glacial lake. Bhutan’s fourth king had the building magnificently restored using traditional materials and techniques. 2004.
