"Trumpeter Swans were once hunted close to extinction. In 1966, Minnesota's Hennepin Parks led the nation in restoration programs for the surviving population. Over the years, the Swans have shown promising growth in the wild – a recent count found more than 2000 individuals from the Minnesota flock alone. With the increased population, the present focus has shifted to long-term recovery of the species. Scientists are encouraging the Swans to take their natural migration patterns, as well as working to ensure the sustainability of several wintering sites.
The Trumpeter Swans are North America's largest waterfowl with a wingspan of nearly seven feet. This frigid, early morning scene is on the Mississippi River near Monticello, Minnesota." -Jim Brandenburg
