During his 1988 visit to Kham, the Tibetan master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche spent three days in a sedan chair, traveling from Derge, capital of Kham, to Dzongsar Monastery. The party crossed several mountain passes and steep valleys, camping on the way. Despite his eighty years and the primitive, jolting ride, Khyentse Rinpoche never seemed tired on the journey. He was, rather, overjoyed to see the landscape and sacred places of his youth. The party stopped at the top of the 16,000 foot Gosé-La pass to rest and enjoy the view, shouting 'Kihi hi! Lha gyalo!'--'May the gods be victorious!'--the cries customary on crossing such a pass. Derge province, Eastern Tibet. 1988.
