MR1162 Galloping to the white scarf

Mani Genkok Festival. One of the main passions of the Tibetan nomads is horses. Races and equestrian games are therefore a major part of this three-day festival. Galloping riders attempt to scoop up the white silk scarves that have been strewn across the grass of the course. This exercise forces them to lean perilously over to one side in the saddle, to which they are attached only by a length of fabric wound around their thigh. The hardest part, however, is setting themselves upright again with virtually no more than one calf in the saddle.  July 2004.
